Sure, you can rip a kick out of someone else's track, but learning how to make rock solid drums from sample libraries/recorded drums using processing is a very useful skill, and it separates the men from the boys. If you can't get this fundamental part of the track right on your own, what makes you ...

A great tip I got told ages ago: If it's a percussive sound you're trying to tune, the sudden volume change of the transient can throw you off. If you stick a limiter with a very fast attack + release on that channel and squash the peak out completely, it becomes a lot easier to hear the natural ton...

I had the good fortune of getting these two tracks picked up by Elite Force's label, U&A Recordings. The man knows how to put out a release! :D

Here's those DJ responses in full ... "Love this!!" James Zabiela (Hearing Aid / Excession) "The Deep & Dirty Mix is the one I'm feeling here, nice work" Mark Knight (Toolroom) "Every track on this release is a killer. New kid on the block Butter Party might have a silly name but the tunes are far f...

I've thought long and hard about this. The short answer is that there is NOTHING you can do to make a project "fully reloadable/tweakable" unless you're using the exact same machine + software (unless it's a ghost image). It's really not worth "freezing" your DAW at one point in time for this abilit...

I find the best way to avoid peaking during the mixdown, is to wait until the track has been sent off to mastering, before you take the ecstacy.

If you're after a synthetic sound, try playing around with granular synthesis - you can generate some huge long textures from reasonably short unsuspecting samples.

One technique which works to some degree for electronic music (best tried on a WAV, not an MP3): If you can find a section of the track with vocals, and the exact same section of track earlier/later on without those vocals, you can try inverting the section without vocals, overlaying the two in an a...

If you have a volume issue you could use a multiband compressor plugin, setting priority to low and hi frequencies. With the right threshold and release rate it could make your stuff sound much fatter. If volume is the problem this is a very bad idea - a compressor or limiter is only going to squee...

I LOVE having my setup as just a computer, MIDI keyboard, soundcard, a microphone or two, monitors + treatment. You can get good sounds out of just about anything if you spend enough time with it, doesn't matter if it's analog or digital or in the box or out of the box. The way I see it: The biggest...
