Re: Counting 6/8 time & dubstep song structure

Is dubstep all people are making anymore? Basically. Anyone can throw together a 140bpm drum part, beat-synced-LFO bass, and some random samples and get something that passes for a dubstep track these days Naturally, the lower the low-hanging fruit, the more of it you're going to end up with There'...

Re: THE SNARE! questions about snare sounds

I am assuming the characteristic that you are referring to is the fill. That can be done easily by changing the pitch envelope in Clip View so that it pitches down with the roll. The "choked" sound will handle itself, due to the fact that the simpler will actually run through the sample at a faster ...

Re: best way to run Launchpad and nocturn

The Nocturn doesn't really have any "mappings": certain knob and buttons have different MIDI values that can be mapped to anything on Ableton. In short: don't be scared, map away! As for the "blue hand," I explain it a bit in the post below as well as give you a MIDI script you can use. You also nee...

Re: best way to run Launchpad and nocturn

I use this exact setup for all of my live shows. The use of the launchpad is probably pretty self-explanatory, so I will focus on the Nocturn. I usually use two pages of the nocturn. Once it gets deeper, there is a chance for confusion. One page I have set up in the traditional DJ setup. Right and l...

Re: How to move your arranged tracks to live session performance

Yup...this was a total gamechanger for me too. I did a presentation at a meetup a few days ago spreading the word about this approach. Anyone who wants to play their own tracks at gigs needs to know about it. One note about sends/returns: Tom doesn't cover it in his video, but there's a way to get ...

Excellent! I have been experimenting with the looper a lot more and this really comes in handy.

Re: How to move your arranged tracks to live session performance

This is one of the best tutorials I have ever seen and revolutionized my live performance.

The only workarounds I had to find were the use of Sends! What is interesting, though, is that the more I used this method, the less I used Sends in my compositions. Tom got inside my brain!

Re: Best midi controller for Ableton?

I use a Launchpad and a Nocturn and I am completely happy, but my criteria were specific. I wanted something cheap (things will break and I don't want to have to pay a crapload to replace) and I wanted everything to fit into a backpack. Also the Nocturn has a crossfader. I also like the idea of only...

Re: Is there a way to map the launchpad better?

Hey there! Might want to check out this thread: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=131553 Could have some useful stuff. As a short answer to your question, I usually put all of the unrelated tracks (instrument tracks, looper tracks, sidechains, etc.) all the way to the right group of 8. Yo...

Re: Follow Action Question

2nd with the dummy clip approach. Just get any bar of audio and turn the volume all the way to 0 and use it as a place saver.

I even have a particular color for this in my sets (light grey) so that I don't go around mashing them and being surprised when nothign comes out!
