Not sure why you guys get crashes. I use 3 macbook pros onstage with live 8 and all of them run the 3 band limiter on the output in realtime. Just awesome.

Try a multiband comp instead of comp and eq. Another thing to try is a comp with a hp filter then eq

Eddie, everything you said is correct. However most direct boxes actually serve 3 purposes. First, they convert unbalanced to balanced. Second, they offer transformer isolation and a ground lift. Im always changing my workflow to keep it fresh. I go through phases and switch it up. Right now what's working is going somewhere crowded (coffeshop bar or park) and fuck around for 4 or 5 hours with ideas. I push myself by taking stuff out live when it's bran new. Makes me really work tools available to me for transitions and arrangement. This also gives me a great idea of how people are feeling about it.
