I don't get these "out of the box" comments, my focusrite usb interface worked great as as soon as I plugged it in and installed the drivers, I don't see how that's different on a Mac. I do it sort of like Angstrom, but I just press record and change the tempo value with the arrow keys, then delete some of the points if I want it smooth/continuous.
