i think you can do it, you just need to use the eq very precisely (because amps have very distinct EQ effects that (e.g.) using saturator alone won't give you).

this is all really weird to me, caring that much about a bass drum sound. i would think you'd want to find your own, rather than replicate existing sounds. but i suppose it's akin to how guitar players feel about certain old amps -- the marshall or fender twin is the only sound you need to consider ...

ah, the irony: the peak oil activist who got rid of his car and rides the train. of course, every such "environmentalist" just reduces demand for oil, keeping prices lower for the proverbial soccer moms in SUVs. it's not as though the oil you don't use is stored away somewhere (it's kind o...

OT, but i love breq's epigram. where's that from? google will likely provide the answer.

i'll second everyone else's fairly noncommittal answers -- both collections are great, i find the track team stuff very useful because it's not just operator focused, has all sorts of good impulse and simpler stuff.

this may not be particularly helpful, but there's gotta be some easy way to do this even now, because it's one of the buttons on the mackie control for live (that still doesn't have an overlay). so if you can figure out what command is being sent by the control when it toggles the brower window, you...

STT-1

i have a millenia STT-1 origin, highly recommend it. sounds great, and you can make any step in the channel either tube or solid state (e.g., solid state mic pre into tube compressor into solid state EQ, etc.), has a great sounding transformer (compares very well to the neve pres i have), and i very...

ummmmm, can anyone provide a decent reason you wouldn't pay different amounts for (e.g.) only using the internet for email (zero burden on system) and using the internet to download film (exponentially greater burden on system)? you pay more to ship heavier packages, you pay more for a bigger steak ...

i'll be contrarian. i got rid of all my hardware, love working with nothing but the machine. find it much simpler, and have yet to feel like i couldn't find the sound i wanted. but i cheat -- i still use an external channel strip for guitar and vox, so i'm really just talking synths and related toys...

i do something similar by taking my old songs written for standard rock instrumental arrangement (guitars, bass, drums), making them wholly electronic or using reaktor or lifeFX to mangle the guitar beyond recognition, amazed at where they end up with new textures, voices, etc., particularly when i ...

i've lived in portland (and DC, NYC, LA, etc.), loved the town, but the weather near killed me. so find out if you can handle the gloom before moving there. if you have the stomach for it, get yourself to europe, always fun, seems far easier to make somewhat of a go there than in US, though i could ...

i'm somewhat surprised how many people on the forum are going with sea chance (which i like alot (see below)). my five (not very original): lips/yoshimi (new ones pretty good too) beck/seachange d'angelo/voodoo (just past five years old) bjork/vespertine darkness (the first one, don't like latest) t...

t. dolby

don't know if someone already linked this, but t. dolby explains his setup for live performance here: http://blog.thomasdolby.com/?p=36 doesn't seem particularly innovative to me. he seems to believe that he's doing more than some other folk do -- in comments, comparisons to kraftwerk just pressing ...

i've asked about this before, no one's responded, i can't figure out any way to predefine the loop or clip length (though you can get there with follow actions once you have clips, which doesn't really solve the problem).

just wanted to say that i don't think we will all always be pushing our computers to the max. at some point fairly soon, editing music on a computer will be like editing text or manipulating fotos. no real stress on system at all, do anything you want, in any way you want. that's actually why i like...
