I would have no idea if 2M represents all active users or not but I'd be willing to bet the number is more than 1M.

It can sample from an external source and it has a built-in midi learn function so, yes, it can do that.

Mine arrived. I've been downloading/updating everything for a while. The version on the dvd was from 2010. Next I have to ask if I am eligible to receive the Guru expansion stuff for free since I still have my Guru license.

Or if that doesn't give you enough control over everything you can try Cycle. It will allow you to create deformation planes (mesh) that you can attach to just about every parameter of a source and move it over time as you see fit. I doubt a beginner would find it suitable but, you never know. It to...
