You need to a/b with and without the limiter. Turn the volume of the limited track down until it is a similar volume to the raw track. Then you will be able to compare the two properly. I use an fx group with the limiter on one chain and the dry signal on another, then solo each chain to a/b compare...

The output from my MBPro is good enough quality for playing at gigs. I've seen plenty of other people with mbps do the same and plenty who use external sound interfaces. They all sound great IMHOTEP

I only use the macbook for gigs - if I run OSX I have to take a sound interface + a USB hub for my midi controller + mouse
I was hoping to minimise my gear so I can carry more clothes/deodorant and less computer gear on planes!
