Yeah that is definitely one option. But ten more years of working 60 hour weeks with no time for music seems like a long time at the moment! Well I just loaded Live 9 suite so I have Max for Live now.
I seem to remember that a while ago Robert Henke made a granulator max device which was pretty interesting but I can't find a download link

As for engineering and production, there is plenty of advice on the net (in fact on this forum) but IMO it is matter of putting in the hours to develop your skills

I have a Yamha CX which is the model before the Yamaha C24. The battery life is great, one AA sized rechargable and I can get at least 20hrs recording.
