When the autotune is used in the crude, artless simply-singing-badly-into-it way it's used in hip hop the last couple of years (and in crappy european dance the last 10 years), it i indeed rather horrible. Well, a new poly analog would be difficult to find for $1k, but non-vintage analogs are for wusses anyway. Plenty of antique ones available for less than a grand.
