Broomstick Bass VSTi does what you want using the upper key range as modifiers. Not brilliant sound wise when compared to Trilogy but has that 'live' play control you desire. Pretty cheap too!

Freezey stuff I do: Copy/ duplicate tracks to selective freeze certain parts. Freeze clips from arrangement in session mode for quick freeze.
