I might buy a good soft synth, but don't use it cos computer screen and mouse don't inspire. I have tried midi controllers, but with couple of VSTs, get confused over which parameters assigned, so workflow suffers. This may be a bit off topic, maybe not, nevertheless I feel like chiming in. You're not missing anything.
It never worked well.

It works about as good as most hardware does with Live.
Live is quirky with hardware.
If Live is the Master, you get one set of issues.
If Live is slaved, you get a different set of issues.

Nevertheless, the AR is a fantastic piece of gear.
