There's info on M4L website that Sierra should not be able to support Legacy Java, so that would prevent some m4l devices from working properly. God, I wish Max would drop that silly and harmful requirement...

It was cool for a while but despite me having a top of the line brand new MacBook Pro it was running very slow, often stuttering which obviously completely threw me out of the flow.

Af course you will be able to connect (almost) any active monitors to your laptop directly - it's just a matter of a correct cable.
