people say the B's (indigos included i guess) sound punchier. i own a b, and enjoy it immensely. i still think TI's look tits.

th absolutely very best hardware sample mangler out there atm is the roland v synth gt. besides that it is a kickass synth. its also incredibly intuitive and tactile, thanks to th touchscreen 8) emu e4000 can still do shitloads of cool stuff. functionally most if not all of what you will need to do ...

just drop the audio into a clip box in an audio track, duplicate it for however many loops you need, and st your loop points for each clip...

how limited is your formal training, exactly?

i suggest expanding on that. ive had a couple years of formal theory and ear training and, as a direct result of this, inspiration is the last problem i find myself having.
