Re: Moleculary tunings in cent steps

I have an acquaintance (an astronomer) who'll chase anyone who starts blathering on about the Cosmic Octave down the street with a broom. He's one of those guys who's all "facty" about that shit - I can introduce you, if you'd like. :-) Clap your hands if you believe in fairies and the fly...

Re: Moleculary tunings in cent steps

So people did a bunch of work for you for free and you're going to make a double CD and charge them for it? Classy! :-) Another possible candidate for synths that support microtonal stuff would be Madrona Labs' "Aalto". Randy Jone's implementation of a Buchla-style complex oscillator is ab...

Re: Moleculary tunings in cent steps

If you're using MSP oscillators to build your instrument, then creating microtonal stuff is stupid simple - you just put a coll object that matches MIDI key numbers with tuning values as floating point numbers and put the coll object where you'd normally have the mtof (MIDI to frequency) Max object.

Re: Sample chopping....Is this possible?

There are any number of ways to do that, but you'd need to own Max itself rather than Max for Live if you want to create standalone applications that have no hooks whatsoever to Live. The rest would just be judicious repatching.

Re: VIDEO: nudge forward/backward

There are two ways to do nonlinear playback of movies in Jitter. By choosing a specific frame using the "frame $1" message. By jumping a relative amount of frames using the "jump $1" message. This presumes that you're familiar with the structure of a quicktime movie (i.e. how it ...

Re: Crazy scaler idea

Come to think of it, there's something like that in a tutorial I wrote on the Cycling '74 website quite a while back.

Re: Crazy scaler idea

I never understand the use of the term "crazy" here - here's nothing particularly crazy about this, since Max folks do it all the time. In M4L/Max, it'd be stupid simple - a large coll with an entry for each of the 128 notes, or (if you want to get fancy and want to keep things entirely wi...

Re: Can live.grid get swing amount from groove clips?

If Darwin (who's one of the clearest and cleanest Max programmers I know) wrote this in Javascript. I'd bet dimes to dollars that it migrated there *after* he initially patched it traditionally and then found it wanting in terms of time/efficiency. He's generally not the sort of person who immediate...

Re: Can live.grid get swing amount from groove clips?

The live.grid object is merely a way to store and display data. If you look at the step sequencer audio device that comes with M4L, you'll notice that the swing logic in that device is entirely separate - it takes the data stored in the live.grid object and *then* works with it. You can, however, us...

Re: semantics of pattrstorage (help!)

They're targeted at somewhat less Byzantine problems than you describe, but there are a couple of video tutorials that are either just up or coming that discuss some of these things [although they're Max-centric rather than M4L-centric - when crossbred with what's in the online tutorial, they should...

Re: Exponential-curve patch for controlling MIDI?

Since pitch is exponentially scaled, you can sometimes use mtof to generate exponentially mapped frequencies. I'm not sure that this passes for a "secret Max trick," but it's not something widely done.

Re: confused about m4l

I guess that would be a little confusing.

In order to use any of the burgeoning group of Max for Live devices, you'll need to own Max for Live. I suppose that the expectation of the Launchpad folks is that you would have it already or something....

Vizzie update for 5.1.8.

An incremental update to the Vizzie set of objects is available that fixes as reported problem with the preset objects not loading saved preset files. Vizzie enthusiasts who have downloaded Max 5.1.8 should install this update. You'll find the update package (which includes the files and installatio...

Re: A thing that could make Live a more unique DAW, microtuning.

This is going to sound kind of stupid, but all I really do is to substitute my own lookup tables using a coll that matches MIDI note numbers to frequencies. Since I use mtof objects all over the place - either for sample playback or frequency calculations for subtractive/additive synthesis, it's jus...
