In preferences make sure midi track over dub is not checked. In the top center of Ableton you'll notice a very small icon, looks kind of like a chain link, engage this button, this allows automation to be recorded. Arm track to be automated and record.

Ok, that's weird

Check your midi preferences in Live, I guess it could be broken but the chances are you're missing something if you're not getting any midi signal from it in Live.

Deactivate clip?

Sounds tedious and there may be another way but it sounds like you would need to record each sample as audio then name it and move it to wherever.

if its not the midi track then it must be something else. Have you tried to restarting Ableton?

It can be a pain to set up at first..

Simply open a brand new (unaltered) blank set and right click on the midi track that abelton provides and set it as default. You'll need to right click on the box where the name of the track (Midi) appears.
