To be honest I'm not sure why- I think the setup tutorial videos I used all referenced it or it was the only way I was able to successfully use it- I never set the virtual ports up, they were just there- and now they're gone!

Cane, have you explored the features of the Drum Rack plugin? You can load tons of samples and toggle between pad banks.

Also, what kind of Midi controller are you using? Even the most basic ones have scene options that will work with drum rack.
