Re: Need an arpeggiator for performance, like Alesis Ion
Sounds like something you might be able to work out in Reason. Their arpeggiator is pretty feature-ritch. As for multiple voices, that could probablyly be done in a combinator with key zones set to different arps merging into one synth. I'm almost curious to try that one.

Re: Why does my export sound so different that what I'm hearing
In the past I've had issues with using lots of automation with rewired Reason racks, where it seemed to have a limit of how much it could handle at once. Since then, I've gotten into the habit of bouncing my reason tracks to audio clips for mixing. You said that you're bouncing to 44/16 with no dith...

Post a screencap of your export settings.

Not sure I follow. If you legally own a license for Live, do the upgrade. If not, purchase the full version, legally.

Re: Vocoder and MIDI track volume help
Looking at your screencap, you still have quite a bit of room to go on the Depth knob. Beyond that, it may be a bad match between carrier and modulator. Try a huge dawtoothy synth carrier just to see if you can get it working. Some carriers work better than others.

Play around with damping vs. decay/room size and pre-delay.

Re: Recording Guitar
Without much data here, it sounds like you have hardware monitoring on combined with poor gain staging.

I use returns for verb, delay lines, and my Phat bus.

Re: Personally I think this is stupid.
Consider that another user might load up a column of glitches and FX, and use a crossfader to cut in these randomized effects. It's flexibility, man. Some folks are way outside of the box with Ableton.

Re: Wav file remixing
There are, however, techniques for doing stereo master remixes. To scratch the surface, there's HPFing the original and clever mixing, along with editing. Some material will work better than others. It's actually kind of a fun challenge - in some ways more difficult than remixing with stems or acape...

Re: How do you select instruments to play live without mouseing?
I'm not familiar with the Impulse, but generally speaking, you can set each track to a different MIDI channel, ARM all tracks, then switch channels on the controller.

Re: Simpler; Editing issues; send controls in return rack
Say what? Open an audio clip, right click on the waveform, choose Slice to New Midi track, and pick whatever options you want from there. You can also set your start/end markers in the waveform display and then drag the clip onto a pad in a Drum Rack on another channel or just trim the clip in-plac...

Re: spliiting the keys on a keybaord controller into channels
Aside from all of that, some controllers do allow you to split the keys into zones. One of the things you can do with zones is assign them to different MIDI channels, 1-16.

Re: controling plug-in parameters; routing in rack instruments
I'm pretty sure that with the IO view activated you can set the rack return's output to your "global" send track. That will basically pass thru to the project returns.

Re: Simpler; Editing issues; send controls in return rack
To answer your second question, there is no cutting in session view. Trimming and splicing in arrangement view is the correct procedure. The sends on the return tracks are there for added flexibility, but are disabled by default so you don't accidentally create some speaker damaging feedback loops. ...
