Can you find out how much physical disk activity you have? I would expect that once you've read your samples in the first time, the operating system would cache the disk blocks in memory to avoid having to read them again. That's been pretty standard practice in operating-system design for decades....

So...how can one get that sample pack?

The non-64-bit Live is at least one of the reasons.
I just built my first live set and started getting "out of memory" errors; not because of my ram running out but because of Live not knowing how to make use of more than 4GB.

At least Ableton announced it will before Lion came out that it's not fully compatible.
