Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac. PC: And I'm a PC. M: You know, I got this cool app called Ableton Live. It lets me do music like, in record time... I can DJ with it, match my beats, do all sorts of fun musical stuff, you know. P: Actually, I do know. I can run this Live application too. And you know what? It lo...

The UB switch isn't easy for all software, particularly pieces which use a lot of platform-specific code (ie, pointer arithmetic, bit-for-bit file access, etc.). This is even worse for products which have a lot of altivec optimization, which NI does indeed use. You most likely know more about Mac p...

OK... two different unrelated concepts there, whch I hopelessly mixed up. Sorry 'bout that. So is there a type of rotary that actually can read an arbitrary value from the software and then start emitting absolute values around that, not relative? It seems this would be easy if the rotary is indeed ...

What if you have an endless rotary encoder that is able to pick up the value that was set in software? Isn't that known as "soft takeover", and wouldn't it be suitable?

In a sampler, "keygroup" means which samples to trigger given a MIDI note. E-MU calls them zones, Akai uses keygroup.

If this is what is meant, then Sampler wouldn't be much of a sampler without them.

Just my EUR 0.02.

I'm waiting with interest for Live 6 and the supposed support for the microKontrol. But since Live 5 supports Mackie Control, an MC emulator does the trick already before Live 6. I've used John Pitcairn's LC Xmu on the Mac, and a similar product for Windows is WiseMix MCmu.

Solved, and how... It turns out that FM7 VST and standalone both die if the keyboard layout of Mac OS X is something else than U.S. English. Now, how lame is that? For some reason the Audio Unit versions work, despite the keyboard layout. I just verified this: if I switch to the U.S. keyboard layout...

The Mac version of FM7 is already 1.1.1.015, there's an update to 1.1.2 but it is for the standalone version only. Then again, the standalone doesn't start up either. (Mac OS X 10.4.7) The Windows XP version of FM7 is 1.10.006, and it works fine both in Live 5.2.1 and Cubase SE3 (3.0.3.658). Also st...

Which OS? I just installed the NI-versary FM7 on my Mac (G4) and the VST version (both instrument and FX) crashes Live 5.2. The Audio Unit versions seem to work OK based on a quick check. The VST version crashes Cubase SE3, too... I haven't registered yet, so I don't know about possible updates, but...

Thanks Machinate, can you say anything more about the architecture? Is this even close: a preset consists of multiple ( n / unlimited?) voices, each voice has a filter and LFO (or several?), you get envelopes for amp, filter, maybe something else too? Is sample modulation set up in a matrix style / ...

For example sampler has just 1 filter, envelope & modulation per sampler instance where as EX/PX has these per voice! The Sampler introduction on the Ableton web site says "every voice is processed with a multimode filter with several filter types". That seems to imply that the archite...

Well, you should be able to render them, at least in real time if you use the E-MU PowerFX VST effect. Too bad it doesn't work properly with Live, causing crackles. I think somebody at the Unofficial E-MU Forum had some kind of solution, but I haven't tried it. At least it works with Cubase. For an ...

Check out Ambient Drums by Nucleus SoundLab. The SFZ format contains the plain waves, easily usable with Impulse.

Yes, I have. Obviously there are a few things Sampler won't do, like automatically sample your hardware synths with SynthSwipe. I am interested in gaining an understanding of how Live and Sampler together could do some of the other things, like Twistaloop. Especially as Sampler is said to have morph...
