Thanks for the advice. I may well get the axiom 25. I just wanted to know whether finger pads are any good, and it sounds like they are alright. Price/Features-wise the Axiom definitely seems to be the best option, because thinking it over, a set of keys would be handy as well...

I presume you're talking about the Groove function. This only seems to have swing settings, no slightly random type settings, and swing will just end up with a triplet feel won't it?

Doesn't you soundcard have an option to record the actual sound going through it? some do some don't. This said, the Ableton Live Demo does what it says on the tin, ie it's a Demo, maybe you should get a paid version if you use it a lot...
