Re: First time composing for a video game, what should I charge?

Okay, that definitely sounds reasonable. Thanks for a reply that doesn't involve Volvos! I thought about charging per minute of music, but it seems more fair for both parties to charge per hour.

First time composing for a video game, what should I charge?

I just received an offer to write music for an indie game. They're a small company and I really have no idea what would be fair. But they've asked me what my rates are, and I'm hoping some more experienced people here could help get me out.

Thanks!

I fail to see the humor in your post(s), if there even is any.

Re: MIDI signal weirdness, phantom activity

Well I'm starting to think it has to do with my MIDI controllers. I have Akai MPK's 25 and 61, and an APC40. I noticed it about a year ago with my APC, the second channel fader would jump around, not the physical control but the MIDI values for that channel (2/7). So when I select a control in MIDI ...

MIDI signal weirdness, phantom activity

I'll put a link at the bottom of a person having the same problem, or so it seems. Basically, I have randomly changing CC values that are usually isolated to one channel. I use an APC40 and it seems MIDI values are constantly jumping around in small amounts, without me touching anything. Makes mappi...

Re: CPU Issues

I also encounter a lot of CPU spikes, pretty much always 5 minutes into using Ableton. They don't always seem dependent on what's happening in live. I can run through the same parts and not go above 35% usage, but sooner or later it will always spike into 120%+ and cause stuttering. I can stop all c...

Re: Where oh where do I put my snare?

I think that in any kind of 'dance' music in 4/4, you'll have a hard time getting around the emphasis of beats 2 and 4. I would almost always consider snare/clap hits on beat 3 to have a half-time feel. Thereby being pretty much the same framework. But there are a ton of interesting variations and s...

Re: PUSH via LPC- - ditto / apC-Carbon

Sounds awesome! Can't imagine using the APC's pads for any melodic playing though, as mine are pretty clicky.

Re: Adjusting start point on ALL clips?

Not too sure if I get what you mean, but I think that the real issue is that if you're using Ableton's tempo, you should probably always have your material coordinated with the time signiture. Unless you intend not to, of course. I don't know how you put your music together, but from what I understa...

Re: Huge slowdown in CPU, definitely need some help

I did suspect my interface had something to do with it, as my USB ports spiked in Latencymon. I have an Alesis Multimix 4, with ASIO4ALL. I also use a USB hub with my APC and MPK controllers connected. My internal sound card is disabled, and the interface selected as the output.

Re: Huge slowdown in CPU, definitely need some help

Martin: I don't have M4L, but I wish it were that simple! TabSel: Monitored my temps and clock speed for a while, looks like the processor is fine. Low at 38C, high at 58C and the clock speed seems to be full tilt. Never really looked into throttling before, but if it were in place, I feel like the ...

Re: Huge slowdown in CPU, definitely need some help

Tried my buddy's interface, and was still the same, and probably will be for all USB setups. I'm thinking its just the simple fact my machine can't handle Ableton. It seems to have the most trouble in streaming the audio clips in my set. Start turning on effects and forget about it. My only options,...

Re: Huge slowdown in CPU, definitely need some help

Well, using Latencymon, I determined that plugging in my USB hub (2.0) would make USBPORT.SYS jump from .06 to 2.6. I don't have enough ports to not use a hub, but it seems this might be cause the slowdowns in Ableton. Has anyone had any luck with this issue?

Re: Why are keyboard controllers so terrible?

I get what you mean, though I do enjoy my MPK. I mapped out the pots, faders and buttons to parameters of Sylenth. So I have a tactile, versatile synth which controls exactly what I want it to. Envelopes, filter controls, arpeggiator, delay, reverb, gate, toggle different oscillators, toggle filter ...
