I got a hunch that it's DSP being applied to make the internal speakers sound "better" which is causing the latency. For me, the latency on my 2014 mbp seems to swing around. Sometimes it's quite low. I haven't yet figured out what's causing it to be inconsistent like this... MacBook Pro? ...
