I think that Drum Racks are set up with the default assumption that the samples getting triggered are short and percussive rather than ones that are meant to go on for a longer time.

I just checked out the APC40 on the Musician's Friend website and it still says "Available 6/1/2009". WTF?!?!

The problem for you maybe that the soft-fader will jump to match the hard-fader, making for some undesirable jumps and dips in your sound when performing.
