I work the opposite way: I normally have the (sub-) bass below the kick drum and perhaps a second bass in the lower mids to make it "phat". Something like <100hz -> Sub(Bass) 100hz-130hz -> Kickdrum >130hz -> second bass I don't cut it completely, this is just the peaks. But it all depends...
