OK now I'm sufficiently confused. Last night I soldered up two cables, one with the sheild attached at both ends, and one with the shield attached at just one. wait nevermind, i got it. the 'trick' is that when you have ground AND shield connections only ONE of them should connect from device to device. if there are two 'ground' connections from device to device and those two grounds aren't the same, that can produce hum. the rest you have to think through...

Soldering TRS cables question
So, according to the Rane technical documents shown at the bottom of this page: http://diy-central.com/HowToCreateYourOwnDIYCablesXLRTRSStudioCables.aspx You should only solder the ground on a TRS or XLS on one side. Is this correct? From some of the examples I've seen done on youtube people solder ...

So, I might *possibly* have the opportunity to work abroad for a year or so, and it would be in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Does anyone on this forum hail from one of those two cities?
