So the consensus so far is that 5.2 is stable and the last point release. As a mac user, I don't plan to throw out my g3 and g4 machines. Almost certainly, version 6 (or some point release of 6) will drop support for non intel macs. That means 5.2 could be the last stop for all power pc machines. Th...

Does beta 6 mean no more 5?

Maybe I missed this. Has all the development been shifted to Live 6? Will there be no more point releases for Live 5? Has there been a formal announcement? I've read so many references to people having problems with the current version. Am I out of touch? Are these only the rumblings of a vocal mino...

Most people are good.

It only takes one to ruin things for others in public.

There seems to be a misinterpretation of civil liberty here.

I was brought up to understand that my own civil liberties stop at the point they infringe on others.

Most shows I've seen have the opening acts play through the mains without subs or merely part of the main cabs. Other shows may limit the number of instruments from the opener that are reinforced by the room p.a. Sometimes this is a physical limitation but more often, it's showbiz. The headliner isn...

Beatles
Thelonious Monk
Todd Rundgren
XTC
Mouse on Mars

That's as honest a top 5 as I can make based on who's influenced me the most.

rasputin,

Funny, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. It's not one of my strong points.

Fairly benign thread really. Off topic for sure but no more so than others.

As for moderation, it may not be popular but it is civil and a good general philosophy that gets me through the day.

I gave up on anything diet after learning about artificial sweeteners. I only drink coke and prefer it to any of the others for it's punch. :) Moderation is probably best. I know myself enough to limit my (real) coke intake to one a day, usually in the afternoon. OJ in the morning, water the rest of...

stallos, Wish I had better news but YOUR problem running reactor will not improve much with an external drive. Plugs need cpu and ram. The one exception is if Reactor is accessing samples. All samples and recorded audio should be moved to the faster firewire external to improve disc access time. 4ac...

Yup. ....and it's worth pointing out that you actually get improved OS performance either way - internal or external. Sound strange? Well, the external drive takes the audio portion of disc access burden off the internal drive so the OS/app responses aren't competing with that anymore. Other benefit...

I just opened up live and dropped impulse into a track. Notice that the DEFAULT decay setting is 2.00 s ! Most good instrument samples are going to be much longer. For a comparison, the original mellotron (beatles) used 7 second "sample" recordings for each key/trigger. That's 40 year old ...

Snowtires,

XLR8yourmac has some good articles on performance and upgrades.

In short, dedicating audio to an external firewire drive is generally much better than installing the faster drive in you ibook. Installing the faster drive will, however, result in snappier OS performance.

4ace, Would you do me a favor? Please turn off the soft synth and compare the cpu meter. Post the results. I'm really curious how much is that one plug-in. True, it sounds ridiculous but it's not unheard of for one BAD plug to bring your machine to a crawl. If you see a dramatic improvement, why not...

Just wanted to make a quick note. The next time you're thinking "I need more gear".... I used to hang out around a Warner Bros project/overdub studio in Nashville for years. Up until about 1999, all of the mixes to come out of there were done with 2 LA2As, one dbx and a the channel strip c...
