Welll, Max history is a bit incomplete. Max dates back - well, at least to the 80ties ... It was developed at IRCAM, then licensed to Opcode ... David (head of Cycling) was involved during the dev at IRCAM and I think later at Opcode, then he started to develop MSP which was an audio extension pack ...

Well, there are also other, very flexible, alternatives, not just M4L ....

Personally, in Logic I miss a dedicated Drum editor (know about hyper edit drum mode), but in Live I think the editor is nice for drums and as good as the drum editors I work with until now (Cubase and DP)
