What's the difference between VST & AU?

I'm on the Mac and have a lot of plugins in VST and AU format.
What's the difference between them? Is one consuming less cpu than another or is one maybe sounding better?

If possible I would like to work with one plugin format and delete the others.

How do you get the rex's files out of Reason?" The unpacker program exported them all to a new folder as rex files .It tokk about 20 seconds to do the whole lot . Took a while to get it to work as the exe. has to be in the right spot,and you need reason 3 on the computer your doing it on .So i...

i assume you are talking about the new version that was just released. has anyone tried it? not supported doesnt neccesarily mean it doesnt work (and actually its seems like its just the GUI that doesnt work, not the synth itself - it probably works, just looks ugly).
