ahem, there's plenty of great free plugins and you can make "edm" perfectly fine with Live's built-in instruments and fx if you really don't have the money.

You mean a clip envelope or an automation (arrangement page) envelope? The latter can't normally send midi cc but there are max4live devices that give this option. A clip envelope should be able to send midi cc's.

Numerically, how do you know what amount of the input signal is affecting the threshold? I've read many tutorials, and it seems like it's a bit of a guessing game with the gain reduction meter. you could also consider using seperate tracks for each sound. I sometimes prefer this method because it's easier to see what's going on in arrangement view. (then I just put all the drum sound tracks in a group or a couple of groups).

I think it was some kind of driver or hardware issue with my soundcard (SonicCore Scope PCI card) which is also the midi interface. I reinstalled the driver and reseated the card in the computer and now it works smoothly again, even on the lower latency setting.

Allright I think it must be something with my interface. I changed it's latency setting to something higher and now it seems to work properly again...
Not sure why that setting would influence it's handling of midi but it sure seems like this fixed it.
