Your on the right way. I read a interview were he said he often makes loops with different lenght and than put them all together to see how the beat becomes something complete different due to the different lenghts of the loops (hope you understand)
To do so, Ableton Live is best

on their site there are a lot of samples from lots of drummachiens. Check ou the TR727 samples for percussion stuff and get the TR808 samples too!
