As far as i know the external instrument is designed to use with midi hardware stuff, i cannot imagine why you would need it for a vst.

you should use the beta 8.1.1.b5.
then uninstall max for live from the live preferences menu.
search for .alp file in the max for live program folder, should be something like maxforlive.alp.
double click it, it will install max into live.
everything should work now.

If you really need that much separate in - and outputs go for the midi express, they perform well with Live.
Otherwise daisy-chain or buy a cheap midi thru box.
