You'll get better performance from OS9, especially if you use external audio hardware.

I've recently been down this path myself. I used to have everything (OS X, OS 9, data) on one un-partitioned drive. Now I have 3 - one for OS 9, one for OS X, and one for data. Live doesn't support ReWire slave mode under OS X.
If you're disappointed by this, I suggest mailing Ableton direct.

I'd happily recommend the Metric Halo Mobile I/O, especially for OS 9 use (until they release new OS X drivers).
