Its strange because the levels were not clipping on the input of the soundcard (as indicated by the red clipping light not flashing) but were clipping on the channel in ableton. So basically I should just record in at a low level, then boost later? Recording vocals is new to me, so I'm just curious ...

Im wondering if it is truly clipping if there is a limiter on the master? Do you have to put a limiter on the channel?

I think example 1 would be less cpu intensive.
Perhaps you could try each example, save them, and then see which one loads up quicker as you can see the number of samples loading in bottom left corner. You could at least get an idea if example number 2 will be "loaded" once or 20 times.

have never owned an mpc myself, but I'd say layering up appropriate samples and having good drum busses setup will get you some fat sounding results. Parallel compression, tubes, and saturation are also things that can beef up your drums. I think compressor settings depends on the specific samples y...

I havent used reason since 4, but I've found much better workflow and ease in arranging with ableton.
I do like the synths in reason though..
