You could use any cheap hardware sequencer (groove boxes) as your "backup": any of the Korgs, Roland, MPC's, Yamahas would be fine and likely much cheaper than a complete "spare" laptop. I recently picked up an Yamaha RM1X for $100. I have an EMX1, RM1X and my super fav: MPC1000....
