When I did it, I still got the pan, just not in knob form - a box with a C (for center) a bit like in the Arrange view

I can make my pan knobs disappear by resizing the track and making it more narrow - have you tried widening the track to see if the knob re-appear? (More of a long shot really!)

The only thing about it is that the mic preamps aren't very powerful and are rather noisy at the top end of the gain setting.
