Re: DJ equipment suggestions for beginners.

I used one of these for the first time on the weekend. What impressed me the most was that I was able to walk up to it, having never seen one before and start mixing perfectly acceptable mixes straight away. It felt remarkably similar to CDJ's. Even beat-matching properly using the pitch fader inste...

Re: Does editing tracks in ableton live diminish quality?EQ/Filt

I'd recommend you read Chapter 31: Audio Facts Sheet in the Live user manual (in fact I'd recommend everyone reads the whole manual). It specifically deals with this and lists the operations that do and don't alter the sound in some way. It seems that Ableton take this whole issue pretty seriously a...

Has anybody actually done the crossgrade offer by simply buying one of their cheaper products first?

Re: Extracting a groove - what happens exactly?

So let's say you hit a snare 2ms late at 1.2.1. If you extract that groove and apply it to a bassline that is perfectly in time, it will move the bass note at 1.2.1 2ms later. This is a great explanation, but where does velocity come in to it.. A captured groove contains the timing and velocity in ...

Re: How can I make my mix transitions be smoother?

You should go back to basics and forget about all the fancy effects for now. Just focus on the bare essentials that DJ's have been using for the last 40 years - two channel faders and an EQ3 on each channel. Practice with this until you can make a mix sound good simply because it is well mixed. Rath...

Except.. From the look of their promo videos and screen shots, it also doesn't have automation curves.. Why is everyone assuming that this version 1.0 product (sorry let me correct that - pre-beta product) is going to be the all singing, all dancing fully featured product that will answer everyone's...

Re: splitting bassline

Any dynamics plugin by nature is going to color the signal. We are talking about using the multiband dynamics plugin with all dynamics processing turned off for the purposes of creating a 3 band crossover. Did you watch this video? http://www.quantizecourses.com/pages.php/?p=895 Presumably, if you ...

Re: DJ Sound quality: Vinyl vs CD vs Live Clips

Im sorry, I meant using normal pitch on CDJs, and if using re-pitch warp in Live on high-res files sounded better. But what does master tempo on the cdjs actually mean? It locks the pitch, like beats warp? I might have acidently used it.. :D Master tempo on a CDJ allows you to speed up or slow down...

Re: DJ Sound quality: Vinyl vs CD vs Live Clips

Did you have master tempo / keylock switched on or off? I can sometimes hear some bad artefacts on the kick drum when master tempo is enabled on a CDJ. Sounds like two kick drums in very quick succession, almost like two mixed tracks that need a very slight nudge to get the beat-matching perfectly i...

wow, I never realised just how much the Multiband Dynamics plugin colors the signal! I always presumed that it would be flat.

Re: Send for clip but not entire track?

How about using an instrument rack. Set up two chains in the rack, one with the send effect and one without. You can then use the chain selector and automate it in the same way using clip envelopes. With a bit of playing around you can get it set up so that the default for new clips falls into the r...

Re: Turning everything below a certain frequency to mono

You can easily filter out any stereo content below a certain frequency using the EQ8. Just put it in mid/side mode then put a high-pass filter wherever you want on the side channel.

This is filtering out rather than specifically turning stereo into mono but it may have the result that you want.

I would have liked to continue this discussion, but as soon as personal insults start getting thrown around on a discussion board its time to go and find something more constructive to be doing.
