no, I've never experienced anything like you describe. are you using a separate hard disk for your audio files ?

when you click on render. the top selection box is called 'rendered track'
Have you set this to "All Tracks" or "Master" ? I suspect it may be set to your instrumental track.

Have you looked at the Octatrack ?
May not be what you're after, but worth investigating if you want to break from using your laptop so heavily
