I'm genuinely curious why you would need this feature? In general, I would never remove the audio interface that I'm using while I'm running a program like Ableton... but even then, if I were to do so, it doesn't take long (10 seconds) to go into preferences and toggle it to the internal sound card....

ableton are obviously missing the basics. channel groups in version 8 of a sequencer? no internal midi channel routing? templates? the list is long. these are sort of things every newcomer sequencer can do.. I think it's fairly obvious that they care what people want, but I think you're somewhat overestimating the demand for this feature in Ableton.

This may be a ridiculous question, but is there a way to map the volume faders to different CC functions (without Max for Live)? And by doing so, have them no longer control the volume faders, so I can use a separate controller with automated sliders for that?

the simple answer to this is that commercially released music is mastered.

there's a lot of options, and it depends on how you're structuring your live sets. Are you going to be playing back mixed files, or are you going to be reconstructing them from individual parts?
