Major Latency Problems with Live 8.3

Post by ze2be » Wed May 23, 2012 4:46 pm

Hi!

Im not sure if I should contact support on this. Check the video link please, if you do have the time!
Anything you can think of might be helpfull at this point.. We are out of ideas here.

The situation:
Kick and percussion is out off sync if Delay Compensation is on.
Percussion is out off sync if Delay Compensation is off, but now the Kick is in sync!
When Delay Compensation is on, Sends are out of sync. But then, Track Delays are muted.
Hence, Sends can not be individually adjusted with DC on. This would have been the easiest work arround.
Maybe we have to adjust Track Delays individually on all the 40 tracks, with Delay Compensation off?

The Project was fine in the beginning, but slowly progressed its latency over time.
Its now 17 months in, and deadline is close.

Soundcard Samples Per Buffer settings makes no difference.
Brand: Motu Ultralight, latest drivers.

Hah. And whos second in that post. :P

Ok, ill write them in the morning..

/17 months in.. Its so not funny that its funny. Some projects have been worked on for 3 years. 200 - 600 hours of work went into each. Its all going to be released this summer, so im really stuck on what to do here. Even though 90% of the tracks are rendered to audio and the rest 10% (drums) are Samplers and Simplers in drum racks, its still absolutely not aceptable to rellease, as one clearly can hear and see on the video I uploaded.

We might have to finish the projects like 100%, and work with the bad latency all the way to the end.. From there on, record the sends on seperate channels, and adjust their play position to corect their latency. Thats the only work arround I can think of right now..

Ok, I got responce from support already. A lot faster then I expected. :)
It might have helped spending some time to write the email. Making it thought through,
simple, clear and to the point, with zero emotions.

They gave me a few tips that im going to try out. Ill report back here soon.

Not much.. Ive been out playing at festivals, but it slows down in august, so hopefully I get some time soon to finish the album, and tweak the system.

As a quick fix to get the latency down for playing this summer, I recorded all the 8 sends with a one shot click on the first beat, and alligned the recorded audio files using this click.

Doing the same thing with all the 50 to 80(!) tracks should fix the problem. But I might need to get a new disk for that. In any case, Live 64 bit is coming, so its a good time to upgrade the system. Actually im not going to touch the pc. I was lucky to get my friends old pc which has the same specs as mine. So keeping mine as backup, we will rebuild a 64 bit system on his. Mine has 32bit windows xp, so moving over to 64 bit win7 and Live 64bit with more ram and an ssd might help. Also going to try my studio mates rme soundcard. Im currently using motu.

But hey, how exiting would life be without obstacles and challanges? If everything was perfectly flowing in the world I would loose inspiration and fall a sleep. That said, I think im entitled for an emotional rant at some point..

A bit of update:
The releases are still delayed, and our fans and friends are starting to get tired of waiting. We use the "its done when its done" explenation, but even that is getting stretched. We dont want to just drop it and start fresh, because all the tracks are done, played numerous times live, and the releases has been planned and expected for a long time ago already. Its just that we dont want to release it with all this slopy pdc timing. On top of that its very un inspiring to work like this, and so it gets delayed further by us.

Its like: what am I going to do today. Am I going to work on my DJ set or our live set which is fun and puts money to the table, or am I going to "rip my hair of" in frustration with weeks of problem searching, system upgrading, moving projects to other systems and Manage Projects for hours and hours, installing a gasilion software on the new system and set up half a dozen of controller presets, try out new betas, and 64 bit live, and what if all that wont work, whos going to pay the bills for loss of income? No one. I think this is understandable for most working people.

Its a good thing the community has picked it up again recently, and hopefully it gets some attention from the developers. Fingers crossed!
