It isnt just ANY synth running through an amp sim. It can't be.

I really need to learn how to make this type of sound my FM experiment was really frustrating, that stuff is COMPLICATED.

I could not find that whoa song on youtube, but found this one:

I posted a link to it here http://hypem.com/track/659333

No offence but why NEED it so much , to be copied?
You asked if anyone could help you with FM8, why did you buy a vsti that you don't understand? it's a lot of cash
No offence again.

But, maybe you should learn some basic synthese technique's, instead of asking, you learn more from discovering it by yourself, also for future projects.

Because Ive been after that sound for a while... its not just his sound its used in a few places and I love it.

I have gotten close but never hit the nail on the head.

I got FM8 because its a good synth even if you dont know how to program FM...

I want to learn though and I think I am starting to get it ... but very slowly.

any good resources on FM synthesis out there?

Any FM8 users want to help me out for some sort of trade or something...

I dont need to copy it 100% I just want to get something that has the same qualities as that bass.

Very plucky and fat but also distorted and just awesome.

Trust me Ive been discovering a lot I just want to find this one out from those who know more than me. It's a smart person who knows to ask questions.

I know a lot about BASIC synthesis techniques... I have a Roland Juno and know how to program it very well... FM is a whole new ballgame and it confuses the hell out of me.

Does the fm 8 manual contain nothing about basic fm programming?
If you don't understand fm that good, you could go for phase distortion synthese like a casio cz has.
Ottherwise, try wavetable synthese for fm like sounds.

Anyway... here is a link on fm for you :

Sorry no tips, he was playing in ableton! He uses logic to compose i think

Try searching for the remix contest he has going with some blog or other
Its to remix Whoa and you get all the parts for the track,
you could study his sound even better
with an isolated bass track ;)
