psychedelic visuals

Post by rbro » Mon Nov 03, 2008 6:53 pm

I'm looking for software similar to the iTunes visualizers that will generate "animations" that react to music, but can also produce video output, i.e. Quicktime movies. Anything like that out there?

Don't expect an automated solution to create dynamic and compelling video. You'll be disappointed.

I've been using this for three years: http://www.soundspectrum.com/g-force/ The commercial license cost varies on what you'll be using it for.

You'll find lots more info over at www.vjforums.com

visual jockey....and now it's free.... (learning curve a bit steep... but very powerful !)

http://www.visualjockey.com/gallery1.htm

the thing I like about it is it's like a modular synth for video...
similarly to jitter/vvvv (without as much math...or freedom...)

you can sync the various freqs of the audio inputs ... to parameters...
create realtime modulation for your content...

G force is also beautiful...
if you're looking for something easy that just works out of the box...
that's your ticket...

I have G-Force, but is there an option to capture video?

It looks like there are a lot of apps for VJ'ing and such that are cool, but I'm really looking for something that looks great but just generates imagery based on the audio input, as opposed to my having to tweak anything. Of course I'd be interested in apps that do both if there are any.

you might want to have a look at quartz composer, its included with the Xcode environment free with osx and is capable of incredible animations.

Its modular, bit like plogue bidule, and it allows you to build applications for rendering graphics in realtime. it can do sound responsive interactivity as well. its wikid.

probably get a few tutorials off the web, if you're prepared to do a bit of work, i'm sure you could get the kind of results you're after.

Processing is another program for visuals, the itunes 8 visualiser was made using it. I think thats free as well.

Thanks, but reading tutorials and building applications is the opposite of what I want to do. I want something just like the itunes visualizer that will output a Quicktime file basically. I want to click a button and walk away and get a cool little psychedelic movie.

do you have final cut suite 2? final cut 6 has some great filters that can turn any piece of footage into mad swirling messes. all you need to do is cut together something rhythmic and you're away.

tbh, i don't think you're going to have much luck finding something that wil do it all for you. somewhere down the line you will have to make a bit of effort to get good results.

That's what G-Force Standalone does.

Quartz Composer with Ableton is great for creating dynamic on-the-fly animations.

examples here:

Oops... I meant G-Force Darkroom (I don't even think they do it any more).

I had mixed luck with Darkroom, so I started using Standalone with Snapz Pro X http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/s ... zprox.html

Works great!
