rekid dirty sound

Post by zakary » Fri Nov 07, 2008 8:52 am

I'm really fond of rekid's lo-fi, slow mo house stuff. Would there be any tips on achieving such a dirty sound ?

Bitcrushing, degrading, compressing plugins ?

cheers

i'm not sure about the specific effects you're talking about here, but a company called izotope has a FREE program to help in what you're trying to achieve. it's called Vinyl and you can find it here:

Matthew Edwards is a productions genius. I'm sure he just uses his ears and his talent with something obvious as say Logic or Live.

Plus he's a vinyl collector, a mad one too. So the chance some mad sound is actually just the right sample with just the right amount of whatever on top is very big.

Yep Matthew Edwards must be a production genius, i really like the character of his dubby sound. I like his quiet village project as well.

Dudes like him, Moodymann, Theo Parish, Idjut Boys, Dj Harvey sample like hell so i guess part of their sound comes from the original recording.

I suppose experimenting will get me there, anything i do has a very "clear" sound.

cheers !

his engineer plays a big part too. Most pros use a pro engineer and a real studio for mixdown

fruity loops and buzz eh?

I wonder if he's come on over to our side yet?

That was a while ago that interview. . .
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

Toby Tobias on Rekids is a good friend of mine and we even released a track together some years back - he uses Ableton - I'm usually the one setting it up on his machine! ;-)

it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of those guys use Ableton ;-)

he's a big sample user - from all kinds of obscure 70s and 80s disco/funk records, so a lot of the grit in his case is from the original vinyl - can't say about the others, but could probably ask

I call bs. He just uses Cubase and mixes 'in the box'.
