Multiple Hard Drives into USB HUB

Post by boraxx » Mon Dec 01, 2008 1:26 pm

hey guys

i got myself a 7 port kensington powered usb 2.0 hub. is it OK to connect more than one external hard drive to the hub at a time? is it ok to connect 3? am i affecting performance of the hard drives by doing so?

i have a macbook pro 2.5 ghz, so only 2 usb ports

thanks

yes, yes and sometimes.

all the devices on the hub have to share the available bandwidth so if they run at the same time you wont get the same performance. If only one is running it should get full bandwidth.

makes sense. but i would imagine reliability is not compromised, just speed?

Well, I never could get ONE usb drive to work well on a hub (I always get random disconnections - and yes, I've tried this with PCs and Macs alike), but it seems some people do. Hubs are cheap, so it probably doesn't hurt to try.
