Do what I do, after every major update, reset PRAM, reset NVRAM and Repair Permissions. Kind of a habbit but I've never run into any problems with my MBP.

10.5.6 hosed a G5 at my work.

no apps will open and lots of the "five languages of Death" screen

fun fun. a different G5 took it fine.

i heard some apps not opening on some machines after update through software update, the way to fix this was to reinstall the combo update from apple website.

What's happening to some installations is that after using "Software Update" to get the updated OS, it downloads but then freezes up just before installing. If that happens, just go to the apple website and download from there. The installer on the website is nearly twice as large as the one that you get when using "Software Update" and installs without freezing up.

we updated it with the DL combo update package.

we will try figure out exactly what brought the system down. it's dead in the water on 10.5.6, we are installing again.

couldn't ssh to it. and it wouldn't reboot. dead.
