CIRCLE VS ALCHEMY VS OPERATOR - Xmas cash gotta go somewhere

Post by nobbystylus » Tue Dec 23, 2008 10:37 pm

I am torn... may have some money coming from santa this year, and was really tempted to get Circle, which i think the demo is really impressive. But now Alchemy has reared its head i'm slightly thrown. I've also never bought Operator, so that also is an option..

come on guys give me a hand what to blow my xmas dough on?

Those are sooo far apart...

#1 - I would wait for the Alchemy demo because they have no XMas deals going on & you wanna make you actually like it.

Operator is nice & simple & integrated with Live with a very unique sound, but not a big synth at all.

I didn't really dig Circle too much after demo-ing it...

I guess my immediate counter-answer would be - Zebra or Sampler :-)

Or Zebra then save for Alchemy...

Operator is quite nice, I would just hold out for a deal on it, $150 is a bit much when Zebra is $199....

circle is not that good. honesly besides the ui it is terrible.
why?
its a cpu hog
the ui is great but its way to big
the effects are horrible
and (heres the biggest problem) aliasing all over the place, total unwanted aliasing..

besides Alchemy (which i read was mostly a sampler and then i stopped caring)
you could do just fine with a free version of the synths mentioned.
if i was going to buy a fm soft synth (im more likely to set my money on fire)
i would buy synplant. just because you dont really know whats going on unless you look at the dna page.
i think not knowing whats going on makes for sounds you wouldn't get normally and also it gets you something quick.

at least try out Synplant, i think its brilliant, really creative and inspiring. and its cheaper than all the other synths mentioned. :)

btw, nathann, alchemy is a 'sample manipulation synthesizer' not a sampler. Its nothing like a normal sampler. Hopefully the demo will be available soon and you can try it because its pretty crazy.

you can just call me nathan.
the extra n is really unnecessary and is only there because the user name nathan was already taken.

seriously pick one of the synths
then take whatever amount of money that synth cost and give it to the first homeless person or person you see stranded.
that money will do so much more good that way then buying any of these synths.

Depends how much you want to spend. If not much, then try to find operator used or buy something like synplant. If you own a camel product already, make use of the customer discount and buy alchemy.

Or volunteer your time and still buy a synth

Zebra 2 or Alchemy. The others are limited sonically, yet with interesting or easy interfaces. If that helps you out, fine, but the two that have a lot of flexibility are Zebra and Alchemy.

I already own Zebra, and if money wasn't tight right now I would probably pick up Alchemy.

It's true. These two synths together offer just about kind of synthesis there is:
VA Subtractive, Wavetable, FM, AM, Physical Modeling, Additive, Granular, Phase Vocoder (Spectral)...

A good pair. Each has what the other doesn't.
