ANYONE KNOW ABOUT MAC PROS?

Post by nicklittle » Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:37 pm

HI GUYS, I GOT GIVEN A MAC PRO THE OTHER DAY, ITS A BASIC ONE WITH A 1.6GHZ PROCESSOR AND 512RAM, WILL THIS BE ANY GOOD FOR MY ABLETON NEEDS IF I BOOST THE RAM? OR ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE THIS A WORTHWHILE TRANSFER FROM PC TO MAC.

MANY THANKS

Not a Mac Pro, but an old Powermac G5 which is really underpowered.....

All i asked is will this be any good for ableton.

All you twats who list what gear you have after your quotes, seriously get a life, its not big and its embarressingly sad.

Music tech is not just for super geeks who lurk away in solitude with 8 ghz processors and a million ram.

fuck off
Dunno about the rest of the guys here, but I list my gear in my sig so that when I respond to queries people can see what my setup is and just how relevant my answer is. Also, when I'm asking for help people can see what I've got and possibly get something relevant from it.

Commuter's response seemed relevant to me - the machine sounds like it's a little bit weedy for a modern music environment. Yeah you can probably bump the RAM up but the processor is still going to be lacking.

PS - you asked was it any good for your Ableton needs, but you didn't exactly specify what those needs are - you DJing with it or doing some production - this will vary how useful your new acquisition is to you.

Most people on here list their specs for the beta testing that takes place each year. So please retract your statement dooshmunger.

English is not my first language, i didn't want to sound rude at all!!
My answer to your question is just no, this computer is not good for live, because it's really underpowered for live, that's all...
So, calm down

take a chill pill Nick.

A 1.6 Ghz powermac G5 (could it even be a G4), with 512 MB of ram will allow you to run Live, but it is quite lacking - this is good information for you. If you want higher track counts i.e. lots of plugins, it will not be sufficient - simple as.

You should definately look to increase the ram to at least 2GB as a starter. This will help a little.
