Got a new PC and it doesn't work

Post by swiffy » Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:49 am

I took a risk and bought a refurbished PC desktop online. I just got it today, and man the PC fan sounded like it was sick. It was loud... You could tell something was wrong. Something was not right with it. So I am returning it.... This is a bummer... I thought about buying this brand new:

I would just use this machine for Live only. How do you think this will work?Thanks....

You know that comment just makes you look like an ignorant fuckwit, dont you?

To the OP, find a friendly geek and get him to give it the once over. Older computers can accumulate lots of dust that gets inside and weighs on the fans which makes them louder. Youd be surprised the difference blowing it out with compressed air will make. I deal with refurbished PCs all the time, by the truckload. We rarely see one that cant be made well with some very cheap TLC.

As for the PROVANTAGE pc, honestly for an extra 100 bucks or so, you should be able to get a quad core 6600 which would blow the doors off that AMD tri core. Live works like a dream on a quad.

its pretty hard to tell the difference between your 'joke' and the hundreds of other 'serious' get a mac comments.

people ask for serious computer help, not everyone has the money to throw at a new computer.

this acer is $459.30

it comes with a ton of crappy software you dont need and crappy vista HOME os... Youll need to at least wipe the drive and rebuild leaving off the extra applications like work and temp office. you only need the drivers for the components...not the extra software. it looks like a headache to me...if youre not familiar with this.

the processor is crap but the bus speed looks good though.

for a little more money, you could have a rock solid Mac mini:

1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512MB
120GB Serial ATA drive
$649.00

if i were in your shoes, i would wait till i had the extra money and get the mac.

i have several thousand windows/ unix/ linux/ freebsd servers at work along with 10's of thousands of routers/ switches/ and firewalls all of multiple brand names...i see this stuff all the time too.

"are you using windows or mac now"
guy #2 shot guy #1 in the face.

thats halarious, lets compare the specs on those
acer - 500 gig
mac mini - 120 gig
acer - 4 gig ram
mac mini 1 gig of ram
and if I'm reading it right.. acer - tripple core 2.1 ghz, mac mini - dual core 2.0 ghz

hm...

so for more money you could have a computer thats 1/3 the specs... that sounds awesome!

listen man, I love a mac as much as the next guy. I use both. but I'll be the first to admit that for the specs macs are a major rip off. sure the operating system is great, quite enjoyable, but you pay more and you get half as far as hardware specs. if you're smart you can get a windows machine running great, have a faster machine that cost less. but thats only if you're smart. of course windows kinda sucks but complaining about it just means you weren't skilled enough to tweak it.

you've also just proven that you weren't joking when you said "get a mac" which mean you win a round of iapplause and a fantastic iaward to put on your iresume. I believe icongradulations are in iorder.

You get free Apple stickers when you get a Mac though. 2 of them, so it's double a deal.

oh shit, really? I'd pay more for a machine with 2/3rds the processing speed and 1/4th the ram if I knew I was getting 2 stickers. oh yeah, and 1/4th the harddrive space... but whateva.. I want the stickers.

and don't you think macs are so sexy on stage? nobody ever got to bang a hot blonde after a gig using a dell to dj trance. I'm of the opinion that a laptop dj is nothing without a small glowing apple to distract his email checking.

come on man...cant you read my tone in 2D...

heres the deal he can have really fast hardware and put a crappy vista home os on it and every application on that os will suck inherantly

or

for about the same money he can get a little slower hardware and put a great os on it and the applications on top of it will actually work like
they should.

it just doesnt make sense to me to produce really crappy work really fast.

id personally rather do quality work efficiently...even if its slower

just my 2 cents.
