Not many presets but highly tweakable.

Got mine free with CM mag (Had to order a back-issue as found out about it a bit late...)

May be able to get it elsewhere with some nifty searching....?
The CM Genesis is a goody! You can get it on the Computer Music DVD each month along with the Zebra CM, Dominator, AlphaCM, Scanned Synth CM I've had fun with all of these, good times.

phattest pure analog style VA:
-Sylenth1
-Minimonsta
-Sugar Bytes Unique
-TAL Bassline (free!)

Dirtyest 'n roughest:
-NI Massive
-Operator

Beautiful pads, soundscapes, and all kinds of crazy granular/additive etc:
-Alchemy
-Absynth 4

A little of everything with also hybrid physical modelling:
-Zebra 2
-Reaktor 5 (A lot of everything actually!)

Honorable mention to FM8 for just being the best fm synth out there.

Ya you're right about that one. Octopus is highly underrated. Great sound and one of the best layout I've ever seen in a synth, especially for an FM synth. An extremely clear layout and most things are on the single pane. I tried it out and was super impressed, but I couldn't justify getting another fm synth on top of fm8 and operator (which are both part of packages and won't be going anywhere). But as far as fm synths go, octopus is probably the best balance of ease of use and flexibility/features (it also samples and does additive!).

yes, a lot of the new synths have very complicated designs but Octopus is simple & sounds amazing, just the way I like a synth to be
