I'm not being unpleasant and judgmental towards Tarekith, he knows my tone after seeing my 2,500+ posts here, I've got nothing but respect for him, it was a friendly jab. Well, a little judgmental, but not much.Simbosan wrote: Yeah well, way to be unpleasant and judgemental.

Eh-hem, what does any of THAT have to do with tone? It's made by Line 6, it sounds like poop.Tone Deft wrote:Junior Brown plays a POD? #$%^~!!! I'm not into his CDs but live that guy is a GOD.
Pod
- ZERO latency
- does NOT glitch
- does NOT go into sleep mode
- cheaper than a laptop
- stronger than a laptop

Hehe I doubt it, but I like him and I use a Pod!
Pod
- More like a kidney bean than a laptop.
- More like a kidney too for that matter
EDIT: Added Junior Brown quote that is pertinent...
"People put too much emphasis on equipment. Some of the best playing I've ever done has been on the worst possible equipment."

Great point!Tarekith wrote:Guitar players are some of the pickiest people on the planet (pun intended). Asking a guitar player about tone is like asking a painter what the best color is. Too many individual variables in gear and playing styles to really make it a worthwhile question.
Personally a safe way to judge whether you agree or not on tone, is to talk about which guitar players you like the tone of. Why compare any software, amp, or pod without starting there?
Personally I think things like punk, country and blues should never be played through a POD or software. Takes the life away. Whereas if you're doing metal or prog, or art rock it's a different ball of wax.
The key to great guitar tone goes in this order:
1) The Player
2) Everything else.
That said, there is no substitute in the virtual world to a glowing tube amp mic'ed in a good room through a high quality preamps and A/D converters. Line6, Guitar Rig, Amplitude, and all the rest sound good soloed, but all of them pale in comparison in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I write scratch guitar lines with virtual amps. But when its for real nothing beats a real amp.
For live purposes, every band I have seen that uses a modeling amp sound like a swarm of bees are coming off the stage. Thin, grating, buzzy, and dull. A tube amp, like my Mark IV, sounds as smooth as a frog's ass.

i think tone is what makes the player great. The simplest shit sounds amazing with just the "right" tone.
But yeah, it's too subjective...
I feel like i'm SO past the point of caring about how perfect my "tone" or "whatever" is, but then i'm hung up on something like this. The problem is, you need A LOT of different tools for different things, and you can't afford to have them all (amps, modelers, boxes, babes, etc)
Anyone care to talk about the difference between the Pod w/and w/o a Variax guitar? I've heard that it makes a big difference.

Proper front end hasn't come up in this recording guitar discussion?
?
Anyone that think they are going to get a thick great guitar sound from a simple POD direct into a computer without a proper front end is crazy.

The vintech thing is a mike pre-amp? Not really relevant to us folks who can't crank up their pukka little valve amps at home, or am I missing something.

Yes, but in my rig is 2 x 2 of both to stereo. Vintech audio unbelievable sound. You all talk about tone, that set up provide.
Only thing itb non TDM that make near same sound is Tritone digital plugs imo.
