KVR Forums' Debates

I love coming into the office every morning, checking my e-mail, checking a few websites like musicians friend's stupid deal of the day, sweetwater's new products, ableton's forums and KVR to see if there were any new versions of the software i own or anything new being released. I usually at that point check out what kind of heated debates are going on in KVR's forums. this morning i started reading the Native vs. UAD thread. opinions varied, of course, but i think it's completely ridiculous how the dongle issue always resurfaces in any type of discussion in those forums. some posters actually referred to a UAD-2 card as being an overpriced dongle... wtf?!? dongles do nothing but hold licenses! which isn't a bad idea, seems how every piece of software that has no form of protection gets cracked within a week of release. i don't understand why people think dongles are inconvenient. so you have to take one of two more steps when you install the software and that's it (nothing more to do ever)... big f'n deal!!! and as far as the UAD-2 being an overpriced dongle... what a f'n moron that guy was. UA puts out some of the highest quality plugin emulations of the most sought after and expensive hardware in the music industry. they look great, they sound great and because of the UAD cards, they run great and don't take your CPU power away from hosts and other software like synths and samplers. someone then went on to mention that video cards and even CPUs move more data faster than the UAD-2 cards, which may be true, idk... but that's comparing apples to oranges. i know it's all 0's and 1's in the digital realm but i highly doubt that at it's current state, a video card could handle 32 instances of an SSL 4000 channel strip. maybe in quad crossfire? who knows? maybe Asus could tell us. they seem to be the only company around that makes both video and audio cards.

Anyway, not asking for opinions on this matter.. so don't bother debating me on it! but if you think KVR's forums are getting a little out of control, feel free to comment.

And if you wanna talk about over-priced dongles... Pro Tools does a mighty fine job with that!!!

I couldn't care less about the KVR forum so I'll proceed to do that which you asked we don't.

If your music computer is a desktop then, yeah, STFU about the dongle. But for many of us a laptop is our music computer and between controllers, external drives, and audio/MIDI interfaces you really don't want one more damn thing sticking out of your laptop, defeats the purpose. You can still work on music when you're out and about even if you don't have those other devices I mentioned but with dongled software you have to have it plugged in.

I'll admit that has made me look for other options if a dongle is involved.

With that said, I do have a UAD1 express card that is quite nice but I do always have in the back of my mind "Will I ever want to have access to this tune when I'm not at home?" But soon I'll be getting the new UAD2 express card and not having it tethered to an external box will be quite nice. Also the fact that it is express card is great because I don't have anything else to plug into that slot anyway and don't have to worry about a USB or Firewire hub to accommodate everything else.

ok.. so you use a laptop for everything? a macbook pro? probably have a firewire interface? how many usb devices do you use and how many open ports do you have when you're working? if you have even one then you're an asshole for arguing just for the sake of arguing. if you have none, get a usb hub. if you're out and about making music with nothing else plugged in, then you do have room for the dongle. i think you just don't want to have to buy software. i think you have a bunch of pirated shit. if you're going to bother having the UAD2 express card plugged in then you can have a dongle plugged in... doesn't stick out any further and they have these really cool swiveling usb adapters that would pretty much make the dongle not stick out at all... i hope that's not your biggest complaint because i just solved it for you. have anymore gripes? i'd love to fix ur bitterness.

that leads me to a pet peave of mine. people that bitch and moan for no good reason! who else hates when people do that? and before i get asked to edit my comments. ask beats me to take out his STFU comment to me. totally uncalled for! i was expressing an opinion and didn't ask to be attacked for it.

i've been frequenting this forum for a while and you both seemed like decent guys. a little opinionated but decent. and FYI, my best friend live in SF. moved up there about 10 years ago. well first to santa cruz. anyway, i'm chill but i don't take being told to STFU very lightly and i certainly don't like being called a moron.

sounded like you needed to vent.

there's no trophy but you could probably pay for the trip by getting people to sponsor your ass kicking trip to SF.

fuck man, you're telling me. this is the 11th 10-12 hour day in a row I've done (hence the post count, I'm chained to a computer from 10-10 every day.) I have 300 hours (7.5 weeks!!!) of vacation saved up and I can't find the time. maybe after next week. ...and I just reverted my project back 2 months 'cause everything went to shit and we're shipping in a week.

hold still motherfucker.

what do you do for work? sounds like a construction project i worked on once for Disney.. did a little over 80 hours a week for a month straight to get the job done on Disney's schedule. Luckily i was paid hourly then.
